Pathway overview
For athletes (or athletic teams) internationally recognized in their sport, coming to compete in a specific athletic competition, petitioned for by a U.S. employer, sponsor, team, or agent.
Verified directly from USCIS's own P-1A page: a U.S. petitioner (employer, sponsor, team, or agent) must file Form I-129 on your behalf, and you must be coming to participate in a specific athletic competition in a sport in which you (or, for a team, the team as a whole) are internationally recognized — a high level of achievement substantially above ordinary, renowned or well known in more than one country. That international-recognition standard is a genuine officer-judgment call this tool doesn't reduce to a checked rule, same treatment as O-1A's extraordinary-ability standard; only the requirement for a U.S. petitioner is checked here. P-1B (internationally recognized entertainment groups, with its own real 75%-of-group/1-year sustained-relationship test) is a distinct classification not modeled by this program entry.
