Pathway overview
For the spouse or de facto partner of an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen to live in Australia temporarily, as the first step toward the permanent Partner visa (subclass 801).
Verified directly from Home Affairs' own eligibility checklist. You must be in a genuine relationship with a spouse or de facto partner who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen, have that partner sponsor you, and be in Australia when you apply (along with any family applying with you). Whether a relationship is 'genuine' is a discretionary evidentiary assessment this tool doesn't check — only the sponsorship fact is. Cost: from AUD 11,710 for most applicants (from AUD 1,955 for Prospective Marriage visa holders), as published at time of research. This visa is the temporary first step; the permanent Partner visa (subclass 801) is a separate program not covered here.
